“WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Doctors are reporting a severe form of swine flu that goes straight to the lungs, causing severe illness in otherwise healthy young people and requiring expensive hospital treatment, the World Health Organization said Friday.

Some countries are reporting that as many as 15 percent of patients hospitalized with the new H1N1 pandemic virus need intensive care, further straining already overburdened healthcare systems, WHO said in an update on the pandemic.

"During the winter season in the southern hemisphere, several countries have viewed the need for intensive care as the greatest burden on health services," it said…”   Yahoo News

Well that information sucks…  Let us hope we do not get with that form of the Swine flu this year.

People Choose News That Fits Their Views PDF Print E-mail

“…News readers gorge on media messages that fit their pre-existing views, rather than graze on a wider range of perspectives. In other words, they consume what they agree with, researchers say.

The finding comes out of a recent study which tracked how college students spent their time reading media articles on hot-button issuessuch as abortion or gun ownership.

Unsurprisingly, students gravitated toward articles that supported their views.

"The idea has been around for a very long time, but it has just never been proven," said Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, a communications researcher at Ohio State University. "It's just considered textbook knowledge or lay common sense."

That preference for similar views may also influence hardcore political junkies who prefer to read blogs with strong political views, according to separate research…”  Yahoo News

This is something that worries me a great deal.  It is not news.  I been commenting on ShowMeBlog for years.  My fear is that we are going to be a nation that is broken up groups.  People that do not listen or even get to hear the other point of view.  People that do not want to hear the other point of view.
I am not sure how you fix the problem.  You are not going to get NRA pro-gun people to even listen to people that seek some gun control laws.  And the other way around.  No one wants to hear the other point of view.
One area that I have noticed it was during the last election.  I would say something that was a firm news fact to a friend and he would sort of yell and say that is NOT TRUE where did hear that on CNN?
I think it is a danger for our system of government.  When you have people not willing to listen to both side and not willing to work with the other side that is a problem for our form of government.
I do not know what the answer is but I think we need to look to the education system.  We need, and I am not sure how you do it, to teach children to have the ability to read and see and hear things and weight and sort out what is fact.
I can do that…I have that ability for some reason.. I am not bragging because God and you know hell I am not that smart…but I can read or hear something and tell when someone is giving truthful fact and when they are just speaking double speak.  Now I do not know if I was born with the ability or if I learned it in school.  I hope I learned it in school because that would mean that others could learn that ability.
But I fear I did not learn it in school because I know in high school I took a test and they said I was in the top 2% of the nation in my ability to read and understand what I read.  Again I am not bragging because on the other areas I was just middle range except for math and I was in the bottom 10% of the nation.
It is sad that now that we have the ability to find large amounts of data and information … we only want to find information that we agree with… We are not willing to check out the other point of view.

Montana resident now world’s oldest man PDF Print E-mail

The following is from Yahoo! News and they got it from AP.

“GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Walter Breuning learned to read by kerosene lantern, remembers his grandfather telling him about fighting in the Civil War, and cast his first presidential ballot for Woodrow Wilson.

The 112-year-old resident of Great Falls, Mont., apparently became the world's oldest man when 113-year-old Henry Allingham of England died Saturday. Breuning was born Sept. 21, 1896.

Now living at the Rainbow Retirement Home, Breuning takes one aspirin and eats two meals a day. He strolls the halls wearing a suit and tie and still walks the ramps to his second-floor apartment.

Breuning said he's more grateful for his health than he is for a world title.

"If you're in good health, you've got everything there is," he told the Great Falls Tribune…”

Breuning credits his longevity to keeping busy and practicing moderation.  I think he is correct.  I been telling my kids “moderation in all things” for years.  I think that is one of the key things in all factors of life.

Microsoft Windows Pricing PDF Print E-mail

I hate being poor and broke all the time.  If you are poor you end up paying more for things.

Microsoft is saying that they expect to sell Windows 7 for $119.19 and $199.00 each.  Because I been using Windows 7 RC I can get half off.  I can get Windows 7 Home Premium for $49.99 and Professional for $99.99.
I am running Windows 7 RC and it is excellent and I do plan to buy Windows 7 when they release it. Because I am poor it looks like I will have to pay the $199.00 and that happens to the poor all the time.

CNN reports that you can purchase an upgrade copy of Windows 7 RC for $49.99 and $99.99 each.  That offer is good for both Windows XP and Windows Vista owners.
Now both these offers are good for a limited time and the number of copies is limited but Microsoft is not giving out a date and a number.

If you buy a new computer with Windows Vista on it you will get a free upgrade to Windows 7 and be able to upgrade without doing a clean installation of Windows 7.

People that are poor end up paying more for things and services and they end up paying late fees etc.
There has been some talk of the United States having a sales tax.  I have heard a few people say that even a half of one percent sales tax would bring in tons of money for the federal government and allow us to pay for national health insurance and pay off our debt and do other things.  I wonder if that sort of tax hurts the poor more than others.  Or is it a fair tax?

I guess some people are thinking of a Value Added Tax which is different than a Sales Tax.  I want to see our taxes become easy and simple but I do wonder if it would not be more fair and better for the poor if food and medication was not taxed or if a person cold get a refund for those taxes when they file a tax report.

How did I go from talking about Windows 7 to talking about taxes?
